In one eBay auction that closed on Monday, a 42 mm Stainless Steel Apple Watch with link bracelet that retails for $999 was purchased for $1,400. In some cases, they are indeed, but often not to the extent that sellers might hope. OK, so people selling stuff online are trying to make a quick buck by taking advantage of impatient Apple fans: Nothing new here. Mind you, anyone can place an order and pay the retail price at the Apple Store for these exact same watches the only reason anyone would pay a premium for an Apple Watch via eBay is that-assuming the listing is legitimate-you'd be able to show it off a few weeks sooner. We probably shouldn't be surprised that some sellers appear to be exceptionally opportunistic and greedy, occasionally posting "Buy It Now" prices that are 200% to 600% higher than retail. As ReCode noted over the weekend, most eBay listings for Apple Watches were of the "Buy It Now" variety, in which sellers post a flat price for the item rather than putting it up for an online auction. Naturally, this combination of strong demand and limited short-term supply led Apple Watches to begin appearing for resale on eBay almost as soon as Apple started accepting preorders. Part of the draw of being an early adopter is the opportunity to get one's hands on the newest tech before everyone else, and a certain group of consumers is sure to be too impatient to wait until summer to get their hands on the new Apple Watch. The first customers who preordered Apple Watches, however, will have their shiny gadgets in hand starting on April 24 or soon thereafter. ![]() Apple reportedly received roughly one million orders last Friday, and demand has been so high that orders placed now won't be delivered until June or even later in the summer. Here’s my love letter to the Seamaster Professional 300m and why I think it’s a great one-watch collection piece, and here’s a run-down of the history of that watch for you to find your own. ![]() Here’s my article about why a black-dial steel sports watch is probably the first watch you should get (and possibly only watch you need), including a ton of links to a bunch of watches that fit the bill-most of them eBay links so they’d qualify for this discount. My Aqua Terra and Seamaster Professional 300m basically trade places on my wrist every other day or so. Otherwise, I’d 100% buy the watches I already own if I didn’t already own them. That’s mighty tempting as well but I don’t think my next dive watch will be another blue one. They made a blue version of the Planet Ocean 37.5mm, by the way, in lightweight titanium ( also in 42mm). But the 37.5mm size of the 8520 appeals to me greatly, despite its 15mm+ thickness (the original 42mm model comes in at 14.4mm thick) for both its size and overall more refined proportions in design. It’s a more direct homage to the vintage Seamaster 300 165.024 that is so widely adored. The original has more quirks and personality in its design. I’ve debated whether I’d prefer the original version in 42mm- the 2201.50.00-or the second-generation, caliber 8520 in 37.5mm. I’ve recently determined that it might be the ultimate dive watch, held back primarily by its insane thickness. If I were personally in a position to buy another watch, it’d be a Planet Ocean. The offer only applies to people with an account on eBay who live in the United States, and it applies toward watches listed for a fixed price, not auction-style. Use code THISTIME10 to get 10% off any watch listed at $2,000 or more.
